How to Get Involved

    For Adults

  • Consider your attitudes about children and youth and try to see them as resources rather than as problems.

  • Take the time to play and talk with young people in your neighborhood.

  • Learn the names of young people that live near you and who work in places you frequent and greet them by name when you see them.

  • Listen to what young people have to say and initiate conversations.

  • Smile at young people you pass on the street.

  • Work with a young person on a school or community project.

  • Expect young people to behave responsibly and be clear about your expectations up front.

  • Acknowledge and thank community members who work with young people (teachers, youth group leaders, social service providers, clergy and others).

  • Support young people in articulating and achieving their goals.

  • Celebrate the accomplishments of the young people in your community.

  • Put a H.E.Y.! Help Empower Youth window sticker in your car, home or store front window.

For Young People

You are an important part of the community! It’s important to take action to support, encourage and involve your friends, siblings and neighbors….

• Get involved in a club, group, team or sport after school.

Help your siblings and friends out with homework.

• Get to know your neighbors – volunteer to help with babysitting or yard work.

Tell your friends and siblings what you like about them.

• Learn about people from other cultures and backgrounds.

Treat your classmates and teachers with respect and expect the same in return.

• Ask for help when you need it.

Challenge yourself to learn new skills.

• Do something creative.

Build a relationship with someone younger than you through babysitting, tutoring, or volunteering as a big brother or sister.

• Become involved in a social issue that interests you, such as affordable housing, discrimination, hunger, the environment, or transportation.
