The Greenwood School's Community Service Learning Program

The Greenwood School is a boarding school in Southern Vermont dedicated to taking bright and talented boys with learning differences and learning disabilities (LD) such as dyslexia, attentional difficulties (ADD / ADHD), or executive functioning deficits and empowering them with the skills and strategies necessary to bridge the gap between their outstanding promise and present abilities.  A comprehensive 3-year pre-preparatory middle school academic program, including science, history, art, literature, music, and athletics, assures our students are intellectually challenged, creatively inspired, and factually informed.

The Greenwood School is looking for organizations to partner with in our Community Service Learning (CSL) Program.

Goal of the CSL Program:
Expand confidence, increase empathy, foster trust and tolerance, and improve the socialization skills of the students at the Greenwood School.

Purpose:
Impact the Greenwood students by introducing them to service work – thereby starting the process of witnessing the inherent value of “giving back” to one’s community. Build mutually advantageous partnerships with local and distant communities.

Some of Greenwood's existing partnership organizations:
The Hello Friend/Ennis William Cosby Foundation
Windham County Humane Society
University of Vermont Agricultural Extension, Youth Horticultural Project

Housing for Youth
A group of stakeholders from the Windham County area have been meeting for the past year to determine how to support young people ages 16 to 20 that find themselves without a stable home. This group has shared their collective knowledge, formally inventoried existing resources in the region, identified a continuum of housing need and recognized the need for more information. A feasibility study has been conducted to determine the best way to use our resources to meet the most need.

Elementary School Career Exploration Program
The Windham Regional Career Center hosts an exploration program for elementary school classes from grades 3 through 6.  The elementary schools' visit to the Career Center includes a tour of the facility and a visit to 5-6 Career Center programs that the Elementary students have chosen.

Visiting the Career Center entails student participation in a shop/lab/class activity.   Examples of these activities are: assembling a bird house in Construction, creating a floral swag in Horticulture, creating a web page in Web Design, and practicing dance exercises in Dance.

The purpose of the program is to provide career awareness and development activities for elementary students and to provide career development support and resources after their visit. The Career Center also provides a state-of-the-art classroom technology demonstration for students and their teachers.
